I have had the pleasant opportunity to study the third issue of the European Manual of Medicine dealing with otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery.

It has been an ambitious project. The aim was “to find a consensus on the demands of the modern European medicine based on the logbooks recommended by the Union of European Medical Societies”. This aim is important in several perspectives. One is to support a standardized training program for all residents throughout Europe to ensure high levels of knowledge and skills. A second is to acknowledge and to support the legitimacy of the UEMS as an authority in medical training and performance in Europe today.

It has been a successful project. The book really offers modern and updated information on diagnosis and treatment in otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery. The very detailed “table of contents” makes it very easy to find what you may be looking for in this very comprehensive textbook. The standardized structure of each chapter works very well. A vast number of high-quality pictures, illustrative figures, and helpful algorithms and tables are offered. The text does relate and refer to recent consensus documents in the field.

We have used the book actively as a gold standard for professional decision making for a couple of months. We have found it most useful both for specialists and residents. Accordingly, we recommend it warmly.
