Abstract

Commenting on our own 1992 publication on surgical management of univentricular hearts, we describe the surgical options of the 1980s and the resulting further development to current levels. Nowadays, technical aspects of surgery and quality of perioperative management have reached a plateau; however, management of the long-term problems of Fontan circulation and efforts to avoid them are of major interest.
