Abstract
Due to advances in engineering and device technology it is possible to miniaturize long-term cardiac support devices. These smaller pumps can often be implanted in a minimally invasive operation without using a heart-lung machine and avoiding a median sternotomy. This article gives an overview of the minimally invasive operation techniques and the currently and in the future available minimally invasive implantable left ventricular assist devices.
