Shortly after her 59th birthday, Professor Beatrice-Louise Pool-Zobel deceased after a long period of cancer treatment.

Beatrice-Louise (Belu) Pool-Zobel studied Biology and Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and after finishing her studies with a Ph.D. degree in 1977 she worked as a toxicologist at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. In 1990 she joined the Federal Research Center for Nutrition in Karlsruhe and there she was directing a toxicology group working in the area of the influence of food and food components on the basic cellular and molecular processes of carcinogenesis, particularly on colon cancer. In 1998 she was appointed full professor and chair of nutritional toxicology at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena (Germany). With great enthusiasm she established an active research group in Jena and collaborated very successfully with other research groups, particularly in a number of European Commission funded network projects.

Since the establishment of the European Journal of Nutrition she was a member of the scientific advisory board and actively supported the EJN as a competent reviewer and also by contributing excellent manuscripts of her own research to the journal.

Belu Pool-Zobel was a member of the board of directors of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and also a member of several international scientific organizations.

Belu Pool-Zobel was a very active, enthusiastic and internationally respected expert in nutritional toxicology and cancer research. We will dearly miss her and the lively, stimulating discussions with her on scientific issues.
