Abstract
Errors and incidents occur frequently in medicine. The likelihood of adverse events increases with the intensity of care, the severity of illness, and the complexity of the care-providing system, etc. The modern intensive care unit constitutes what psychologists have termed a “cognitively complex environment”. Considering the many organizational tasks and responsibilities related to patient care, verbal and written communication are of utmost importance for all areas in intensive care. Difficulties with such communication, i.e. misunderstandings or failure to communicate at all, constitute a relevant shortcoming in our daily routine. Although we know about these limitations, concepts for improvements still have to be developed for the intensive care unit team.
