Computer Graphics International (CGI) is one of the oldest and prestigious annual international conferences on computer graphics. Researchers across the whole world are invited to celebrate and share their experiences and novel achievements. CGI is the official conference of the Computer Graphics Society (CGS), a long-standing international computer graphics organization. CGI and CGS were founded in Tokyo by Kunii from the University of Tokyo in 1983. Over the past decades, the CGI conference has been a key venue for the computer graphics community and has taken place all over the world. It is a truly international conference with former conferences held recently in Ottawa (Canada), Bournemouth (England) and Hannover (Germany). In 2014, the 31st CGI conference was held in Sydney, Australia, hosted by the University of Sydney, and supported by the CGS.

This special edition of The Visual Computer contains the best 35 papers from the CGI 2014 conference. We have received 135 submissions from over 30 countries. To ensure highest quality of the publication, all the submitted papers were assigned to three expert reviews to provide constructive feedbacks to the authors. We had 100 International Program Committee (IPC) members as the reviewers and further 77 external sub-reviewers invited by the IPC. From these submissions, 35 best papers have been selected to be published in this special issue of The Visual Computer, making the acceptance rate of 26 %. We like to thank all the authors for submitting their high-quality work to the conference.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the IPC members as well as to the external sub-reviewers for their expert reviews and their extremely hard work in reviewing all the papers in a short time. We further extend our thanks to the local organization committee members who have contributed greatly to the review process.
