Scaling the inner region of turbulent plane wall jets

Abstract.

The present study reports refined laser Doppler anomemetry measurements in a turbulent plane wall jet. The Reynolds numbers based on jet exit conditions are in the range 7,500<Re (=U j b/ν)<14,000. The skin friction velocities were determined from the velocity gradient in the linear viscous sublayer or by fitting a fifth-order polynomial to the data in the near-wall region. The results show that a turbulent wall jet has a universal inner region that is identical to a turbulent boundary layer. It is also shown that the composite velocity profile proposed by other researchers for a turbulent wall jet can be used to model the inner region of the wall jet.
