Abstract
Experimental infrared absorbance in the normal configuration of vacuum-evaporated silver films on a transparent wafer is inconsistent with the calculated electromagnetic field based on bulk optical constants, the effective-medium approximation, and classical electromagnetic theory. We propose a model of a non-resonant-type enhancement mechanism based on the square columnar structure model. The calculated infrared absorption intensity is then in better quantitative agreement with the experimental observations of enhanced infrared absorption of adsorbed species.
