Abstract
The lifting technique used by weightlifters has become the model for back-saving lifting. Bending, shearing and torsional forces are converted into less harmful pressure forces. Weightlifters have very good body proportions, and the mobility of their hip is excellent. They grip the dumb-bell at a height of 44 cm. These positive individual conditions are unusual, and the favorable grip height is not normally an option in everyday life. This means that the back-saving lifting technique cannot be applied and correctly followed through, and critical situations for the spine then occur. Therefore most people are justified in refusing to lift loads at workplaces in industry.
