Zusammenfassung
Ontologien haben einen weiten Weg vom philosophischen Konzept zu Instrumenten der modernen Informatik zurückgelegt. Ontologien bilden heute – und noch viel mehr in der Zukunft – Grundelemente von vernetzten, kooperativen Applikationen. Ontologien erlauben, Applikationen zu bauen, welche nicht nur die Struktur von Daten, sondern auch die Semantik (Bedeutung) von Information erfassen und verarbeiten können. Diese Fähigkeit eröffnet neue, weittragende Möglichkeiten für die Informatik, z. B. in der Form des Semantic Web oder A2A (Application-to-Application) Anwendungen. Dieser Beitrag zeichnet die Geschichte des kraftvollen Konzeptes ,,Ontologie“ von seiner ersten Beschreibung in Buchform im Jahre 1730 bis zu den heutigen und vorhersehbaren Anwendungen.
