Abstract
This theoretical article attempts to explain the puzzle of subjective time in ordinary and extraordinary states of consciousness with self-perception. The experience of the variability of the passage of time is even more extreme in altered states of consciousness. In these situations, a joint modulation of time and self occurs. The altered experiences of time and self in patients with mental illnesses of depression, anxiety and substance dependence—an overly strong representation of time and self—are placed in the context of possible complementary interventions, such as meditation, floatation restricted environmental stimulation technique (floatation-REST) and psychedelic drugs, which are based on the outlined psychological and neuronal foundations of time and self-perception.
