Abstract
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) as a treatment for couples and the conceptualization of couple relationships as attachment bonds are presented. The EFT model of couple dynamics integrates the findings of Gottman’s research on couple interaction, the affective neuroscience (Panksepp), knowledge gained from research on dyadic emotion regulation and the mentalization concept. The most basic need in couple relationships is a secure emotional attachment. Conflicts in couples are conceptualized as an interruption of the attachment bond, as a failure of dyadic emotion regulation and a fight for the emotional responsiveness of the partner. The EFT was developed by inclusion of this knowledge and from the microanalysis of therapeutic alteration processes in process research. With an effect strength of d = 1.3 in several meta-analyses EFT is currently the most effective method of couple therapy worldwide.
