We are pleased to welcome Dr Yoshihiro Nabeya of Japan, who has joined the WJS editorial board and will serve in the area gastrointestinal and oncologic surgery. He was born and raised in Chiba, Japan. He obtained his M.D. (1985) and Ph.D. (1990) from Chiba University School of Medicine, Japan, and he completed his surgical residency training at Chiba University Hospital and affiliated hospitals. Then, he studied surgery and esophageal/gastric cancer biology under Professor David B. Skinner and Professor Nasser K. Altorki at the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cornell University Medical College/The New York Hospital (1992–1994). After returning to Japan, he gained extensive clinical experience and joined the Chiba University School of Medicine faculty as an Assistant Professor. He is the Deputy Hospital Director and Chief of Esophago-Gastrointestinal Surgery at Chiba Cancer Center, Japan, and was appointed a Clinical Professor at Chiba University School of Medicine. In addition, he is now the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Japanese Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (JSPEN). His clinical and research interest has been in surgical oncology of upper GI cancer, particularly esophageal cancer, emphasizing tumor biology, surgical outcome, perioperative management, and nutritional care. Before becoming a surgeon, he was active as a table tennis player. In his free time, he enjoys watching musicals (that captivated him in New York) and driving with his beloved wife and two dogs (Shih Tzu).
