Dr Hiroharu Yamashita was born and raised in Yamaguchi prefecture, a rural area of Japan. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, in 1998. He completed his surgical training in two rural hospitals, the Kanto Rosai Hospital in Kawasaki and the Ibaraki Prefectural Central Hospital in Kasama. He spent 1.5 years as a chief resident at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, where he focused especially on surgery for adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction and the stomach. Dr. Yamashita obtained his Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo in 2009. He joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2010 and then spent 10 years working at The University of Tokyo. In 2021, he was promoted to Professor of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Nihon University School of Medicine. His clinical research interests include management of upper gastrointestinal tumors, particularly adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction and the stomach, minimally invasive esophagectomy and gastrectomy procedures, and aggressive conversion surgery for stage IV gastric cancer. He has published several reports on these topics. Dr. Yamashita enjoys spending time with his family, his wife and son, and jogs in his free time.
