Prof. Gyedu is an academic surgeon practicing in Ghana. He obtained his MD from Hacettepe University in Turkey and completed his training in general surgery at Ankara University, Turkey. He returned to Ghana to work at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, later becoming faculty at the Department of Surgery, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he is currently Associate Professor of Surgery. He currently heads the surgery unit of the University Hospital, a first-level facility providing care for the university’s catchment area in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana.

By practicing general surgery in both tertiary and first-level hospitals in Ghana, he has gained the unique experience of the context within which surgical care is provided for the vast majority of low- and middle-income populations. This spans the spectrum of primary care, emergency care, and operative care. This experience has largely driven his research activity in the areas of Global Surgery, Injury, and Health System Strengthening, leading to more than 80 publications, and grants from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funders.

Prof. Gyedu is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, and the West African College of Surgeons. He became a member of the International Surgical Society after winning an ISS-Foundation Travel Scholar award in 2013 and has served on the WJS editorial board since 2017.

Prof. Gyedu will be replacing Charles Mock MD MPH PhD of the University of Washington in the United States, who will be rotating off the editorial board after having faithfully served as Associate Editor since 2011. Thank you, Charlie, and welcome Adam!
