Prevalence of spondylolysis in symptomatic adolescent athletes: an assessment of sport risk in nonelite athletes

Most reports of sports-related spondylolysis have studied elite athletes. This four year retrospective study reviewed medical records of non-elite athletes (56% female) between 10 and 19 years of age participating in an organized sport who presented to a sports medicine department with a primary complaint of back pain. Patients without spine imaging were excluded. Over 40% of patients played more than one sport. Spondylolytic injuries occurred in 308 (30%) of 1025 patients with either frank spondylolysis or pars interarticularis stress reactions diagnosed by positive radiographs, CT, SPECT or MR images.
