Atypical presentation of tophaceous gout in the hand

Abstract

Gout is the commonest crystal-induced arthropathy. Recognised for millennia, it classically affects the first metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot. It may also affect the hand, particularly in cases of chronic tophaceous gout. An unusual case of acute tophaceous gout affecting an adult male is presented whereby the patient presented with ulcerated gouty tophi of his dominant hand. A multidisciplinary management approach was adopted, which resulted in complete resolution of the patient’s symptoms with an excellent functional outcome.
