Prof. Dr. Johan Van Goethem, MD, PhD, EDiNR, new Editor-in-Chief of Neuroradiology

We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Editor-in-Chief for Neuroradiology. The appointment followed a rigorous, transparent, and independent selection process, led for the first time by an ESNR commissioned External Selection Panel chaired by professor Mauricio Castillo with the membership of professor Luis Marti-Bonmati and professor Mef Nilbert. The Panel and Springer selected Professor Johan Van Goethem EiC for the next 3 years.

Over the last 15 years, Johan has been at the heart of the ESNR, in the Executive Committee but also in many other areas of activity. First as treasurer then as Vice President, President, and Past President. Johan has also been Director of the ECNR courses since 2017.

Johan finished his medical studies at the University of Antwerp in 1986 at which time point he joined the department of radiology as a resident at the same University. He became a senior staff member in 1993 and was appointed Professor of Medical Imaging at the faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Antwerp in 2004. At the same time, he is also senior staff member at the Department of Medical and Molecular Imaging of the General Hospital VITAZ in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium.

Neuroradiology is of critical importance to the success of ESNR and to implementation of its vision of the future of our society and of our profession. We are therefore creating structures that will ensure a direct and continuous communication between ESNR, EiC, and Springer to the benefit of all.

We are looking very much forward to the next exciting chapter with Prof. Johan Van Goethem as the new EiC which no doubt will be transformative for all.

Welcome Johan!

Tarek Yousry

President of the ESNR

Prof. Dr. Rüdiger von Kummer, Editor-in-Chief of Neuroradiology 2017–2022

Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger von Kummer did his medical studies in Göttingen and Heidelberg, Germany. Maybe this was already a sign that he would become one of the most successful Editor-in-Chiefs of Neuroradiology, a journal published by Springer, managed from that same city of Heidelberg.

Rüdiger von Kummer trained and was board certified in Neurology, Radiology, and Neuroradiology at the University Hospital in Heidelberg. He started out as a consultant Neurologist at the same hospital in 1980 and he became Director of the Cerebral Vascular Research Laboratory in 1983. He became consultant Neuroradiologist in 1987. In 1996, he was appointed Professor in Neuroradiology and Chair of the Department of Neuroradiology at the University Hospital of the Technische Universität of Dresden in Germany. He worked as Chair of the Department and Director of the Dresden University Stroke Center until his retirement from clinical work in 2014.

He was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Neuroradiology in 2017. The year before, the impact factor (IF) of Neuroradiology was 2.274. At the end of his second 3-year term, the 2021 IF had risen to 2.995 and the 5-year IF of 2021 is 3.112. Under his watch, the number of submissions per year increased from 576 in 2016 to 886 in 2021. During his 6-year term as Editor-in-Chief, 4.249 submissions were received, 16.307 reviewers were invited, and 7.795 reviews were completed!

Rüdiger worked closely with the Managing Editor, Dr. Lisa Babinec, who checked each submission in addition to the Journal Editorial Office (JEO). She assigned each submission to the Section Editors and the EiC (letters and editorials). During his leadership, Rüdiger was able to identify and publish the best science in neuroradiology while keeping the highest ethical standards.

For all of those reasons, I wish to thank Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger von Kummer for his years of exceptional dedication and outstanding contributions to the journal Neuroradiology.

Thank you Rüdiger!

Johan Van Goethem
