In modern science the borders between the different disciplines, such as chemistry, biology and physics, are increasingly fading, leading to a variety of cross-disciplinary fields. In chemistry, knowledge of the working principles of living systems, on the one hand, and the substantial progress in materials science, on the other hand, for example, have opened up perspectives to achieve artificial materials with bioanalogous properties. For instance, chemistry has always aimed at describing natural phenomena on a molecular basis and generating artificial systems with superior mechanical and chemical properties. More recently, mimicking nature has gained substantial attention, thus overcoming frequent drawbacks of biological systems, such as reduced ruggedness against harsher conditions and limited long-term stability.
