After a body had been found in a wood, investigations were made to establish whether mushroom spores in the nasopharyngeal space are suited similarly to pollen to specify the time and place of death. Numerous spores were found in the liquid used to rinse the nasal cavity of the corpse which, in terms of morphology and staining properties, could be clearly identified as spores of the orange chanterelle (hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) which was growing at the site where the body was found. Hence, it is basically possible to use spores for specific investigations if the vegetation period is known and the relevant mushrooms are present. Systematic studies on the applicability of spore analysis to the practice of forensic medicine are required. At present it can be assumed that this method is suitable to restrict the time of death to a specific season and to obtain information about the place of death if the corpse has been moved to another site.
