Abstract
Incest is defined as heterosexual intercourse between blood relatives exhibiting 25% or more common genes due to their common descent. Consanguinity refers to a less near relationship. Incest and consanguinity involve a dramatically higher risk of genetically-induced diseases. The prohibition of incest is firmly anchored in the world religions. In almost all human societies of the present and the past, incest has been outlawed and punished. Sociological studies suggest that the incest taboo develops as early as in childhood (Westermarck effect). Recent findings prove that incest avoidance is also a marked phenomenon in the animal kingdom and that the biological determination presumably also applies to man. However, incest is a phenomenon occurring in all human societies, engrossing the attention of psychotherapists, jurisprudence, and also forensic medicine. The present paper studies this topic under various aspects. It also presents three cases of suspected incest.
