The paper describes the application of a methodology, rate of change, which permits a comparative measurement and assessment of the predictive abilities of several subject observers to be undertaken. A study is included which applies the analysis to improving the performance rating ability of industrial engineers. The conclusions drawn, using the method described, are then compared with the results obtained using conventional methods of analysing the same data. The results indicate that the rate of change methodology can resolve the difficult problem of having to reconcile several, often conflicting, measures.
Although this paper describes the application of the rate of change methodology to the examination of rating performance, there is no reason why the same approach cannot be adopted in any situation where subjective assessments are quantified. To this end the author has already applied the analysis to both economic and quality assessment data sets.
