Abstract

Thread profile and spline profile on different portions of parts can be formed at the same time by using thread and spline synchronous rolling process based on cross rolling, and the slide tendency between rolling dies and workpiece at initial stage of spline rolling can be avoided in the synchronous rolling process. The phase coordination between different profile sections of rolling die before rolling is a key problem to realize the synchronous rolling with well thread and spline profiles. There is a definite requirement for the relative phase between thread and spline sections of synchronous rolling dies in theory. However, it is difficult to satisfy this requirement in the manufacturing process of synchronous rolling die. Thus, a die manufacturing method was developed in this paper, and it combines the phase adjustment of rolling die before rolling process and the adjustment of die structure. The phase coordination between different profile sections of rolling die before rolling is achieved by adjusting thickness of additional spacer block/shim between thread section and spline section of the synchronous rolling die. At the same time, relative phase between thread and spline sections of synchronous rolling dies was also adjusted. The thread and spline synchronous rolling process and the developed die manufacturing method were verified by experiment. The developed die manufacturing method reduced the die manufacturing difficulty and enhanced the usability of thread and spline synchronous rolling process.
