Abstract
Contour-parallel offset (CPO) tool path is widely used in the rough machining process for dental restoration. In order to minimize the number of tool retractions that do not contribute to the actual cutting as well as to optimize the links between tool path loops (TPLs), a novel CPO tool path-linking algorithm based on graph model is presented. With the directed relationship built during the calculation of TPLs, a directed graph model is constructed and then divided into many subgraphs. As a result, all TPLs are split into several grouped TPL units. TPLs in each unit are linked by linking point pairs. Finally, a CPO tool path without tool retraction can be generated by traveling TPL graph. Several test results show that this method can effectively obtain CPO tool path without tool retraction and overmilling.
