Yet another year has almost ended. It has been a good year for the journal in many ways. Most importantly, we should like to start by thanking everyone who has been involved with the journal during the last year especially the reviewers, who are listed below. We are aware of the fact that reviewing a manuscript is time-consuming and unpaid and all too often the best reviewers are bombarded with simultaneous requests from several journals. We are very much aware of this, so we try to limit the number of reviews each reviewer receives but feel we may be only partially successful. We know that we rely heavily on the same (arguably the best!) reviewers repeatedly to do this unglamorous and time-consuming work.
We are continuously looking for new reviewers in order to redistribute the workload, but we need to persevere in this quest although there are currently more than 600 on our reviewer database. A very big thank you to all our reviewers for all their great effort, commitment and expertise during this year. Your work is invaluable and without you, the journal would soon be out of business.
At the ESSKA congress in Geneva in 2012, we selected for the first time the “Outstanding reviewers of the year”. We repeated this last year and we will announce the two best reviewers for 2013 as well as the best paper published for 2012–2013 at the ESSKA congress in Amsterdam next year.
Under the leadership of Karen Baxter, who started last March replacing Elodie Reyter, our Editorial Office now coordinates very well with the ESSKA office in Luxembourg. We would like to use this opportunity to thank Elodie Reyter for the immense work she did in establishing the Editorial Office during the last few years and wish her luck in her new endeavour. Our website has been upgraded and is now (www.kssta.org) coordinated with the new ESSKA website, and at the last count, we have more than 300 friends on our Facebook page. We sincerely hope that all these activities are rewarding for authors and readers of the journal.
We were really happy to learn last June that the KSSTA’s Impact Factor for 2012 had climbed to 2.676. This places the journal in a top position in the categories of both Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics. For instance in the category of Orthopaedics, we climbed from 16th place to 12th. However, we know improvements are still possible and our immediate goal for the next 1–2 years is to attain an Impact Factor of 3.0. To achieve this, we need your help with excellent papers submitted to the journal as well as a quick turnaround time on which we have concentrated during the last 12 months.
Where are we now and what will the future bring? The 2,800 pages we published this year is a record number as are the 1,200 submissions we received. We welcome the increased number of submissions, but we value quality over quantity.
We have made some changes to the Editorial team, with 4 new Associate Editors, who have quickly settled seamlessly into their roles. We would like to welcome Volker Musahl, Klaus Bak, Gino Kerkhoffs and Johan Bellemans to the team. We should like to thank the outgoing James Calder, Philippe Hardy, Karl-Peter Benedetto and Tassos Georgioulis for their excellent services during the last 5 years.
We would also like to welcome a few new Editorial Board members. They are Lucio Ernlund, Andrey Korolev and Claudio Rosso. They have all performed outstandingly as reviewers and we look forward to their future contributions.
Finally, we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year in 2014. The journal will meet new challenges, but we feel that the Editorial team is strong and ready to face the challenges ahead. The future is ours….
