Abstract
The concept of background currents is offered in the examples of barotropic and baroclinic quasigeostrophic models. The background currents are characterized by constant value of potential vorticity, which minimize the energy of a system. Hamiltonian character of motion equations of fluid particles allows to apply such models to study chaotic advection.
