Original ArticleFree enthalpies, free energies and norms for dielectrics with fading memory

Within the theory of electromagnetic materials with memory we construct a new history space \({\cal H}\) and a new free enthalpy \(\zeta_{\rm M}\) which turns out to be the maximal one among all the possible free enthalpies. The corresponding free energy \(\psi_{\rm M}\) may be thought as a squared norm on \({\cal H}\). This ensures the continuity of \(\zeta_{\rm M}\) on \({\cal H}\)with respect to such a norm. Moreover \(\zeta_{\rm M}\) and \(\psi_{\rm M}\) may be written in the frequency domain, i.e. in terms of the Fourier transforms of the variables. Then we compare \(\zeta_{\rm M}\) with some other free enthalpies. Finally an application is given for stability problems.
