Optimal mean displacements of a loaded string (funicular)

Abstract.

Optimal mean displacements (such as the mean square displacements) of a loaded string funicular fixed at both ends are found for different classes of force distributions. Rearrangement inequalities and other related techniques are used to derive these optimal values.
