Abstract

Hot flashes, sweating, and vaginal dryness are the only symptoms consistently reported by women in epidemiological studies of the climacteric period. Several other somatic and psychological symptoms are reported by midlife women, but based on available data from studies, these symptoms may not be conceptualized as typical symptoms. If women ask for treatment of vasomotor symptoms, estrogen or estrogen/progestin combination therapy is efficacious. Few reliable data exist regarding the longitudinal course and variability of symptoms of vasomotor symptoms.
