Abstract
Congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia is a rare disease with an incidence of less than 1:200,000. The hereditary transmission is autosomally dominant, with a gene mutation on the 12th chromosome. The result is an alteration in type 2 collagen. During gestation and adolescence there is normal development of the cranium and the trunk but markedly reduced growth of the long bones. There exist several differential diagnoses for congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia that include osteochondrodysplasias with disturbed growth of the long bones. Lethal cartilage and bone diseases which can be recognized prenatally and must be excluded before birth are thanatophoric dysplasia, fetal achondrogenesis, and type II osteogenesis imperfecta.
