Abstract
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is successful as a treatment for infertility, i.e. in cases of tubal or male fertility disturbances. The natural and IVF fertilisation processes are practically identical, as are their respective rates of pregnancy. With IVF however the rate of miscarriage and the risks of both premature birth and deformity are elevated. It is unclear whether these drawbacks are due to the method, as subfertility itself is a risk factor. Despite its separating the coital act from conception, IVF nonetheless aids the success of a marriage. Thoroughgoing education of the couple is necessary. In Germany strict limitations of embryo protection laws hinder the abuse of IVF. Manipulation of the fertilised ovum is also not permitted, as fusion of the egg and sperm is seen as the inception of life.
