Posttraumatic aneurysm of the brachiocephalic trunk: a rare injury

Summary

We report on a posttraumatic aneurysm of the brachiocephalic trunk, something which is rather rare. The injury was caused by blunt chest trauma following a car accident. Computed tomography could not find the brachiocephalic lesion. In patients with fractures of the upper ribs after blunt chest trauma, angiography should be done to exclude severe injuries of the aorta and brachiocephalic vessels.

Zusammenfassung

Wir berichten über den seltenen Fall eines posttraumatischen Aneurysmas des Truncus brachiocephalicus. Vorausgegangen war ein stumpfes Thoraxtrauma im Rahmen eines Verkehrsunfalls. Durch eine Computertomographie (CT) konnte die Gefäßverletzung nicht diagnostiziert werden. Bei Patienten mit Frakturen der kranialen Rippen nach stumpfem Thoraxtrauma muß nach Möglichkeit eine Angiographie zum Ausschluß einer lebensbedrohlichen Gefäßverletzung gefordert werden.
