Abstract
Visual diagnosis by recognizing the physical symptoms of congenital metabolic diseases is often difficult. Several hundred different conditions make it difficult for physicians to memorize all the various symptoms. A delay of several years from the first symptoms to the final diagnosis is not uncommon. On the other hand, many conditions are treatable and an early visual diagnosis enables early treatment. The focus of the article is on the early recognition of treatable metabolic disorders, such as homocystinuria, Niemann-Pick disease type C and congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG) Ia disease.
