Abstract
Children and adolescents with increased susceptibility to infections or symptoms of immune dysregulation should be evaluated for primary or secondary (acquired) immunodeficiency. Secondary immunodeficiencies are common and can be iatrogenic, e.g. caused by immunosuppressive treatment or infections. Primary immunodeficiencies (PID) represent a broad spectrum and are manifested as clinical signs of immunodeficiency, autoinflammation and autoimmunity. The field is rapidly evolving and currently there are approximately 300 different genetically determined PID. Every 2 years the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) classifies PIDs into main groups. Diagnosing and treating PID in a timely manner helps to improve survival and quality of life.
