Abstract

Depression (depressive episode and dysthymia) in children and adolescents is often misinterpreted diagnostically as somatic complaints of unknown cause and aetiology. Worldwide prevalence rates, however, have indicated that this disorder occurs very often and has sufficient diagnostic validity. In addition to the differential diagnosis a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for practitioners is the assessment of suicidality. In the context of well-balanced multimodal treatment, depression in children and adolescents can be treated effectively. However, it is essential to consider the risks and benefits of the chosen interventions (psychoeducation, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy).
