Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Innovation by the toy industry seems almost endless. However, new toys cause new dangers to children’s health, especially toddlers. A recent example is seen in “make-it-yourself superballs”. This toy is sold as a kit containing shiny, colorful granulated material, which is supposed to swell in plastic molds after being put into water. The resulting bouncing ball has good elasticity. The problem is that the granules can easily be mistaken for effervescent edible powder.
Material and methods
The characteristics of the material under approximated physiologic circumstances were examined.
Results
Because of the material’s distinct swelling and adherent features, we see a danger that it could occlude the upper digestive system.
Conclusion
Even the suspicion of oral ingestion of the material needs immediate further diagnostics. Because the material may not be detected on X-ray, we recommend sonography or gastroscopy. Early consultation of a paediatric surgeon should be done. Currently, there is a product recall for these particular bouncing balls. Nevertheless, it must be assumed that a large quantity of this material remains in circulation within the European Union.
