Abstract
Practical-year students feel that their day is poorly planned, leaving insufficient time to prepare for written examinations (2nd state examinations, M2). Practical-year teachers are limited in the amount of teaching they can do due to work intensification; moreover, they seldom have special didact training. The following are generally required to ensure a successful practical year: 1. formulation of coherent learning targets covering the entire clinical study period – including the practical year; 2. Instruction in and reflection on the learning process (in particular study aids such as E-learning, log books and portfolios); as well as 3. sufficient teaching time and didactic training for teachers. For an effective traineeship in the pediatric elective year – as well as all other specialties – the learning targets must be coordinated with the compulsory turns (general targets should be achieved here). Specific learning targets should be achieved without aiming for a specialist level. Eventually the practical-year student without a pediatric elective should still have the opportunity to achieve the pediatric targets held in the licensure.
