Abstract
The TBE virus is the most important tick-borne human pathogenic Flavivirus. Since 1976 a well-tolerated, effective vaccine has been available. Currently two products are available in Austria and Germany (FSME-Immun 0,5 ml®, Encepur 0,5 ml®) that are also available at half dose for children up to the 12th year of life (FSME-Immun 0,25 ml Junior®, Encepur 0,5 ml®, Encepur 0,25 ml für Kinder). In Austria the strategic switch from vaccination of high-risk groups to immunization of the whole population at risk of exposure has successfully reduced the number of infected persons to an all-time low.
