Abstract
In the year 2000 in Germany, 482 infants died with the diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Therefore, SIDS is still the leading cause of death in infancy after the neonatal period. Between 1985 and 1989 in the German Democratic Republic, the incidence was much lower than in the Federal Republic of Germany, which could partly be explained by a lower prevalence of the prone sleeping position. Compared to other countries, the incidence in Germany is still high for the year 2000. The international classification of SIDS is not standardized and therefore different rates cannot be compared easily.
Notes
Die SIDS-Daten der DDR 1985–1989 beziehen sich auf ICD-9:780–799, die SIDS-Daten der BRD 1985–1989 auf ICD-9:798.0
