Abstract

Recommending the supine sleeping position is the most effective measure to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The lateral sleeping position is less beneficial than the supine position. Additional safety can be achieved by optimizing the sleeping environment to avoid the risk of suffocation and overheating. The use of a sleeping bag seems to be the best solution. Prevention can be focussed on identifying infants at higher risk. Home monitoring might be beneficial in selected cases.
