Zusammenfassung

A novel method for the determination of the water content in wood has been developed and experimentally tested. Based on the reaction of trimethylchlorosilane with various wood constituents and water, the generation of a by-product (hexamethyldisiloxane) was pursued and quantified via gas-chromatography and the water content was subsequently calculated back. The experiments were carried out with preconditioned spruce wood meal (particle sizes ranging between 60 and 140 microns) using water free solvents and reagents in a water free reaction atmosphere. The results showed that the investigated samples incorporated around 10 wt. % of water after preconditioning for 48 h.
