Bei etwa 95% aller mit M. leprae infizierten (in Kontakt gekommenen) Personen kommt die Krankheit nicht offen zum Ausbruch. Das klinische Erscheinungsbild wird nicht so sehr durch die direkten Auswirkungen der bakteriellen Infektion als durch die T-Zellvermittelte Immunantwort bestimmt. In diesem Übersichtsartikel werden aktuelle Aspekte der Epidemiologie, Transmission, Bakteriologie, Klinik, Reaktionen, Behandlung und Diagnostik der Lepra berücksichtigt.

Summary

About 95% of individuals who come in contact with M. leprae do not develop overt disease. The clinical form of the disease correlates with the T-cell mediated immune response of the host rather the direct damage caused by bacilli. We review the current aspects of epidemiology, transmission, bacteriology, clinical features, reactions, diagnosis, chemotherapy and treatment of reactions.
