Management of Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affecting an estimated 4.5 million people within the European Union. Indeed, the prevalence of AF continues to rise, in view of the aging population and the better management of heart attacks, making it the new “epidemic”. Irrespective of a rate control or rhythm control strategy, appropriate antithrombotic therapy is central to AF management, by reducing the risk of stroke and thromboembolism. This overview focuses on the management of AF, with reference to recently published guidelines and describes their application in clinical practice using three clinical case scenarios.

Zusammenfassung

Vorhofflimmern ist die häufigste Form von Herzrhythmusstörungen, mehr als 4,5 Mio. Menschen in der EU sind davon betroffen. Die Prävalenz von Vorhofflimmern steigt weiter an; in Anbetracht der älter werdenden Gesellschaft und der besseren Überlebensrate nach Herzinfarkten nimmt Vorhofflimmern epidemische Ausmaße an. Neben der Arrhythmiekontrolle ist bei Vorhofflimmern vor allem eine adäquate antithrombotische Behandlung entscheidend, um die Gefahr von Thromboembolien und Schlaganfällen zu reduzieren. Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt darauf, darzustellen, wie Vorhofflimmern auf der Basis von kürzlich publizierten Leitlinien behandelt werden kann. An drei klinischen Fallbeispielen wird deren Anwendung beschrieben.
