Koreanische Medizin, eine besondere Variante der ostasiatischen Medizin – aus historischer, theoretischer und klinischer Sicht (Teil I)

Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit der Koreanischen Medizin (KM) als einem Bestandteil der ostasiatischen Medizintradition, deren theoretische Grundlagen, wie etwa Yin und Yang (陰陽) oder die Fünf-Wandlungsphasen-Theorie (五行), ihren Ursprung im alten China haben. Gleichzeitig beschäftigt er sich mit der Frage, welche Elemente der KM sich von anderen ostasiatischen medizinischen Traditionen wie der TCM oder der japanischen Kampo-Medizin unterscheiden und welche sie mit diesen gemeinsam haben. Im ersten Teil des Beitrags wird die Geschichte der Traditionellen Koreanischen Medizin dargestellt. Des Weiteren wird untersucht, wie die KM seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert über die Zeit der japanischen Kolonialherrschaft (1910−45) hinweg bis in die postkoloniale Ära (seit 1945) den Einfluss der westlichen Biomedizin aufgenommen und verarbeitet hat. Entsprechend wird das wichtigste Merkmal des südkoreanischen Gesundheitswesens – die Koexistenz von Biomedizin und KM – anhand aktueller statistischer Daten dargestellt.

Abstract

This article introduces Korean medicine (KM) as a part of East Asian medical tradition sharing medical principles originated from Ancient China such as Yin-Yang (陰陽) and the five element/phases (五行) theory, while focusing on common and distinctive features of KM from other East Asian traditional medicine such as TCM and Japanese Kampo medicine. First, it summarizes the history of traditional Korean medicine. In this part, we will pay particular attention to the ‘localization process’ of East Asian medical principles in Korean medical history. In addition, the response and adaptation process of KM will be examined against the inflow of Western biomedicine from the late19th century through the colonial period under Japan (1910−1945) to the post-colonial period (1945-). Accordingly, the main characteristic of the South Korean medical system – namely the co-existence of biomedicine and KM both as professionalized forms of medicine – will be introduced with current statistical data.
