Abstract.
The stability of a force-free magnetic field of a conducting fluid cylinder is developed. This has been carried out upon utilizing the normal mode analysis valid for all short and long wavelengths of axisymmetric perturbation modes. Indeed, the instability of force-free magnetized flows is a challenge to physical understanding and mathematical skills. The equilibrium state is studied by taking the Lundquist field (1951) and it is found that the fluid kinetic pressure is non-uniform. The stability criterion is established and studied analytically and numerically. The (un-)stable domains and their characteristics are explicitly identified.
