Joachim Rosenthal is Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Zürich. From 2011–2013 he served as Chair of the Mathematics Department and from 2016–2020 he has been Vice Dean of the College of Science. He received the Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Basel in 1986 and the PhD in Mathematics from Arizona State University in 1990.

From 1990 until 2006 he has been with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame, where he has been last “The Notre Dame Chair in Applied Mathematics” and Concurrent Professor of Electrical Engineering.

His current research interests are in coding theory and cryptography. He serves currently on the editorial board of SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry (SIAGA), Advances in Mathematics of Communications (AMC), Journal of Algebra and its Applications (JAA), Journal of Algebra Combinatorics Discrete Structures and Applications and the International Journal of Information and Coding Theory (IJOCT). He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society and as Treasurer of the Swiss Mathematical Society.

From 2004 until 2018 he has been moderator (together with Madhu Sudan) for the information theory section of arXiv. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a honorary professor of Universidad del Norte, Colombia.
