Summary.

We consider the problem of characterizing Jensen differences and some related expressions. Specifically, we use functional equations to characterize expressions of the form

$$f(x) + f(y) - \lambda f(\mu(x + y))$$

for parameters λ, μ when f is defined on a suitable module.
