Huisarts-consulenten Palliatieve Zorg bieden telefonische ondersteuning aan collega-huisartsen

Veel patiënten met een chronische ziekte brengen de laatste levensfase thuis door. Deze patiënten zijn voor palliatieve zorg afhankelijk van hun huisarts. In Noord-Nederland is gedurende vier jaar geëxperimenteerd met een nieuwe vorm van ondersteuning bij deze zorg. Het project bood huisartsen die palliatieve zorg verlenen de mogelijkheid telefonisch advies te vragen aan vier collega-huisartsen die specifiek waren opgeleid op dit gebied.

In dit onderzoek evalueren wij de resultaten. In de loop van het project, dat liep van 2000 tot 2003, steeg het aantal adviesaanvragen gestaag. In totaal gaven de huisarts-consulenten 1385 telefonische adviezen, waarvan 10% buiten kantoortijd. De adviesaanvragen kwamen vaak kort voor het overlijden (bij een prognose van dagen tot weken) en betroffen in meerderheid de bestrijding van fysieke symptomen, al kwamen gaande het gesprek ook vaak andere problemen naar boven. De huisartsen vonden de gegeven adviezen waardevol; zij namen 85% van de adviezen over. Deze vorm van ondersteuning lijkt dus goed aan te sluiten bij de behoefte van de huisarts.
