The unstable radiocarpal joint in rheumatoid arthritis

Summary

The inflammation of the wrist occurs very early in Rheumatoid arthritis. In cases of wrist deviation the biomechanics of the hole hand are affected. Carpal collaps will severly influence the range of motion (ROM) of the fingers. Operative techniques of how to maintain hand function are discussed. There are different procedures available – partial arthrodesis, arthrodesis and arthroplasty.

Zusammenfassung

Bei der rheumatoiden Arthritis ist das Handgelenk früh befallen, es ist Schlüsselgelenk für die gesamte Biomechanik der Hand. Bei zunehmender Destruktion und Instabilität des Handgelenks kommt es zum karpalen Kollaps und zur Achsabweichung, so daß auch die Funktion der Langfinger aufgehoben ist. Deshalb sind chirurgische Maßnahmen zur Stabilisierung des Handgelenks wesentlich, um die Funktion der gesamten Hand zu erhalten.
