Zusammenfassungen
Summaries
As a starting point for proposing a research program in mass communication the article refers to the problems arising from the present change of media systems. A crucial component of the change (which is interpreted as a consequence of technological innovation, deregulation and globalization) is the enormous expansion of communication channels, messages, and services. The future development is seen not only in a further expansion of the quantity of the communication supply, but also in a further differentiation of contents and specialization of communication channels; in the increasing availability of various services via cable and satellite systems; in the improvement of the quality of the data and multimedia hardware.
These developments could enhance the problems that are already observed and discussed today; they could also create new problems. Three clusters of problems are discussed as examples: (1) the processing of political information in the mass media (new interpretation of news values), (2) the patterns of media use of the audience (fragmentation and individualization of media use), and (3) the formation of images of the world in the recipient’s perception (disorientation and political malaise).
